Experience a unique musical performance celebrating Jewish tradition and innovation as internationally acclaimed shofar soloist Bar Tzemach joins pianist Jascha Nemtsov and the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for an unforgettable afternoon of music. The program will showcase both the Shofar and French horn in Jewish music, including classical pieces, traditional melodies, and Klezmer. The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform a selection of Hanukkah music from their Midwinter Lights show.

The program will last approximately 90 minutes.

Internationally acclaimed shofar soloist and horn player Bar Tzemach is the first known musician to perform the shofar melodically and chromatically in concert. Recognized by the Jewish Chronicle, he has debuted two pieces written especially for him and has performed with the Berlin Philharmonie, Israel Symphony Orchestra, and the Thüringen Philharmonie. Next year, he will debut with the Nürnberger Symphoniker, the Sächsische Bläserphilharmonie, and more, and will continue his collaboration with one of his mentors, Giora Feidman, as a member of the Klezmer Virtuos Quartett and Giora Feidman’s Trio.

Zemach is Principal Horn of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under Daniel Barenboimm, and has previously played on contract with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and the Staatskapelle Berlin, recording a CD and performing in both opera and symphonic repertoire. He studied with Prof. Christian Friedrich Dallmann and is currently pursuing a Master in Religion and Culture at Humboldt University of Berlin.

Jascha Nemtsov is an internationally renowned pianist, musicologist, and one of scholar of Jewish music. Born in Magadan, Siberia, he studied at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory and has lived in Germany since 1992. Since 2013, he has served as Professor of the History of Jewish Music at the Liszt University of Music Weimar. As a researcher, he has authored several landmark publications on Jewish music, including From St. Petersburg to Vienna: The New Jewish School in Music (1908–1938) and Jewish Music: Introduction.

As a performer, Nemtsov has performed around the world, recorded more than 40 albums, including numerous premiere recordings of works by rediscovered composers. His recordings have received numerous international honors, including the German Record Critics' Award in 2007, the OPUS KLASSIK Award in 2018, and, his most recent CD “Ukrainian Préludes”, was nominated for the International Classical Music Awards 2025.

The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Robin Lopez-Hanshaw, will perform musical pieces celebrating Hanukkah and music from other winter traditions.
